Volunteer Opportunities

Hello Everyone!

If you're stuck for a volunteer opportunity to use for your Service Learning Activity then go to the website listed below. Community Sector Council NL is a resource centre for volunteers and organizations.

http://www.envision.ca/templates/resources.asp?ID=5750

You can search for positions depending on the area of NL you select. There are lots of opportunities there with contact information. There may even be something there that you didn't know about. There is also a link on that page to help build your resume using volunteer work. That is definitely a very useful resource!

This link is for Envision Youth and has information about how, where and why to volunteer. Additionally it highlights the expectations, rights and responsibilities to consider while volunteering. Most importantly it has a section on reflection.

So check that out! It's worth a click.

Service Learning Activity Options

Hello Again!

Here are the other options for the Service Learning Activity. Feel free to choose one of these but be sure to check back to this blog periodically for updates.

Essay
In approximately 1000 words please answer the following question:
Describe a volunteer activity that you are currently working on. How has this activity helped develop your leadership abilities and what impact has this activity had on your community?
This will be due February 20th, 2011 and should be directed to sandrac@mun.ca
Video
The video should be approximately 5 minutes and also show and discuss what you have learnt in your activity, the development of your leadership abilities and your involvement in the community. Please show scenery of your community and interviews with people you have had an impact on. Try to get footage of you in action! This will also be due February 20th, 2011 and should be forwarded to sandrac@mun.ca

Thanks!

The Blog Option

Hi Everyone!
Welcome to the Horizons Blog! You will find all of your important due dates and other helpful hints here. My contact information is on the right if you have any questions! I have also added a list of particpant blogs so you can see and comment on what other people are doing for their activity.

Here's a review of the Service Learning Activity! Please remember to send me your blog addresses :)
·         Choose the activity you plan to work on over the next few months
o   If this is a new activity, you can focus only on the progress of that specific activity in each of your entries
o   You do not necessarily need to start a new activity. You can talk about an activity you are currently engaged in.

·         Create a blog at www.blogger.com
o   Name it as you wish, but preferably something that will distinguish your blog from someone else’s. For instance, things may get confusing if there are 30 blogs with the title “Horizons Service Learning Activity Blog.” Try throwing your name in there or make up your own title like “Evan’s Awesome Spectacular Horizons Activity!”

·         Make your blog yours! This can be as simple or as complex as you want.
o   Find a layout and background that you like or try uploading your own. Some sites offer free templates. Just Google “free blogger templates”

·         Make three (3) entries that are approximately 200-250 words each
o   The due dates will be the 20th of each month. Please note that you can post them any time before these dates or schedule blogger to post them at an exact time.
Blog #1 due November 20th, 2010
Blog #2 due December 20th, 2010
Blog #3 due January 20th, 2011

·         Add pictures, videos and links in your blogs (optional, but awesome)

·         Make one (1) final entry of 200-250 words due February 20th, 2011 that summarizes:
What you have learned. For example:
o   New skills?
o   Things about yourself?
How you have developed your leadership abilities. For example:
·         Are you more comfortable delegating roles?
·         Have you helped show others how to get involved?
What impact you have had on your community! For example:
Who has benefited?
How has this helped your community?

Here is a video about how to set up a blog!
There are also several videos on youtube that explain how to upload videos and pictures and a whole bunch of other cool stuff.
That's all for now! I look forward to seeing you first blog :) Please e-mail me if you have any questions whatsoever!
